TIRA LAUNCHED OFFICIAL TOUR FOR INSURANCE EDUCATION IN ZANZIBAR
An educational tour on health insurance awareness has officially begun, August 13, 2024, in Zanzibar. A delegation from TIRA (Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority), led by Deputy Commissioner Ms. Khadija Said, visited North Unguja Region and met with the North A District Commissioner, Hon. Othman Ally Maulid. They later met with the Regional Commissioner, Hon. Rashid Hadid Rashid, where over seventy local leaders (Masheha) were briefed on health insurance and other types of insurance, including agricultural insurance.
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Khadija Said, in her presentation to the Regional Commissioner of North Unguja, Hon. Rashid Rashid, stated that the purpose of TIRA's visit is to support the efforts of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, and the President of Zanzibar, Dr. Hussein Mwinyi, who have signed the Universal Health Insurance Act.
She reminded them that on November 19, 2023, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan signed the Universal Health Insurance Act No. 13 of 2023, which aims to ensure that every Tanzanian obtains health insurance for access to healthcare services in hospitals and health centers across the country. Similarly, the President of Zanzibar, Dr. Hussein Mwinyi, signed the Zanzibar Health Services Fund Act of 2022. Both laws aim to ensure that all citizens and residents in the country receive reliable health services using health insurance.
The Deputy Commissioner also emphasized the importance of government leaders, including local leaders (Masheha), having an understanding of insurance matters so that they can spread this knowledge to a broader audience.
The North Unguja Regional Commissioner, Hon. Rashid, commended TIRA for their efforts in providing education on insurance matters and urged them to continue this educational outreach regularly, as insurance is beneficial and its understanding can lead to increased usage. He also supported the idea proposed by TIRA of having a special officer to handle insurance matters and provide regular updates to TIRA.
